Pól Brennan

Pól, a founder member of Clannad is also an IFTA Award winning film score composer, producer and recordist.

In 1982 Pól co-wrote ‘Theme From Harry’s Game’ with brother Ciarán, bringing Clannad to the UK charts and picking up an Ivor Novello award. The song was also nominated for a British Academy Award and featured later on US blockbuster, Patriot Games.

After leaving Clannad in 1990 to pursue a solo career, Pól started working with Peter Gabriel at his Realworld studios and collaborated with and produced records for the Real World label. Pól produced an album called Yuan by the virtuoso Chinese musicians The Guo Brothers, later joining flautist Guo Yue and percussionist Joji Hirota to form Trísan. The trio then joined the WOMAD festival tours of 1992 and 1993 and received acclaim for their extraordinary mix of east-meets-west music.

Pól was one of the producers who worked on A Week In The Real World alongside Phil Ramone, Tony Berg, Peter Gabriel, Karl Wallinger of The Waterboys and Alex Gifford of Propellerheadz, and musicians including Van Morrison, Sinéad O’Connor, Remy Ongala, Toto La Momposina and The Terem Quartet.

In 1996, Pól wrote the music for a Theatre production of Hamlet which featured Sinéad O’Conner in the score and in the subsequent year composed the music for Tombs: A Dance Theatre Of Ireland, which toured Europe.

Pól scored for film ‘When The Sky Falls’, the story of Irish reporter Veronica Guerin. Taking a break from films, Pól wrote and produced ‘Through The Lens Of A Tear’, the début album for Eurovision-winning singer Eimear Quinn, based on the story of Tristan and Iseult and released by Decca Classics in 2002.

In 2005 he composed the score for Mee Shee -The Water Giant created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. It is a major family adventure movie directed by John Henderson and stars Bruce Greenwood, Rena Owen and Tom Jackson.

In 2008, Pól received an IFTA for the score of ‘Kings’. In 2008/9, he produced the début album for Tara Byrne.
